Yorkshire County Cricket Club would like to place on record its thanks after Leeds City Council awarded a grant towards the redevelopment of the North-South stand at Headingley Stadium.
The Club sought funding of £4 million as a grant contribution towards the £28.5 million scheme in a move to secure the long-term future of Headingley as a Test match venue and a Category A cricket venue beyond 2020. Additionally, the awarding of four Cricket World Cup matches in 2019 are dependent on the redevelopment plans being completed.
The Club’s Chief Executive, Mark Arthur, said: “Yorkshire Cricket is very grateful to Leeds City Council for the grant support we have received towards the building of a new stand between the cricket and rugby ground at Headingley. Without their support we would not be able to host the Cricket World Cup in 2019 or Test matches thereafter.
“Sport is very important to our region and forms an integral role within a balanced society. International cricket has been held in Leeds since 1899 and brings with it history, tradition, international reputation and economic benefit to the wider area.”
The award is subject to planning approval and if granted it is hoped the stand will be completed by April 2019.
